Als Pilotprojekt der archivpädagogischen Arbeitsstelle am Hessischen Staatsarchiv Marburg startete DigAM im Jahre 2000/2001 und kann heute mehr als 10.000 online abrufbare Dokumente in über 100 themenspezifischen Ausstellungen präsentieren. Das breitgefächerte DigAM-Ausstellungsangebot reicht vom Mittelalter / Frühe Neuzeit bis zu aktuellen zeitgeschichtlichen Themen - mit einem besonderen Schwerpunkt im Bereich des Nationalsozialismus. Konzeptionell folgt das Dokumentenangebot von DigAM dem Prinzip des „explorativen Lernens“: Der Nutzer findet bei DigAM keine fertige Geschichtsdarstellung vor, sondern er muss die Vergangenheit aus der Vielzahl der verfügbaren Online-Quellen immer wieder selbstständig rekonstruieren, analysieren und bewerten. Basismodul von DigAM ist das Einzeldokument: Jedes Dokument hat eine eigene URL und ist einer thematischen „Ausstellung“ bzw. einem „Ausstellungsraum“ zugeordnet. Eine Volltext-Suchfunktion erlaubt gleichzeitig die gezielte Dokumentenrecherche z.B. nach Entstehungsdatum, Urheber, Ort bzw. beliebigen anderen Schlagwörtern. Ein weiteres Rechercheinstrument ist die „Zeitleiste“, mit deren Hilfe alle bei DigAM vorhandenen Dokumente unabhängig von ihrer jeweiligen thematischen/epochalen Verortung chronologisch nach Entstehungsdatum/jahr abgerufen werden können.
